With its endless array of bright lights, big chains and long lines, Hong Kong’s retail scene can prove daunting for even the most seasoned of shoppers. Look past the trendy spots and famous names, however, and you’ll find hidden gems like kapok, the multi-faceted retailer founded by Arnault Castel in 2006, and one of our go-tos for great products and a brief respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. Its Sun Street location in Wan Chai, in particular, is a breath of fresh air – located off busy Queens Road and beyond the steep rise of St. Francis Street, it’s the perfect setting for Castel’s well-edited selection of clothing, lifestyle goods and art, as well as the site of our upcoming pop-up store hosted in conjunction with kapok.
Titled “The Art of Daily Life,” this month’s Obscura/kapok partnership draws upon the theme of our new summer issue and was intended to provide a more tangible, physical element for our readers. The pop-up also represents our beliefs and aesthetics, as well as a way to show our appreciation of the beauty and simplicity of everyday objects. Among the items we’ll be sharing with readers are T-shirts and tote bags from the Obscura brand, plus selected objects from featured stories in our newest issue, including Rose Bakery cookbooks, archival copies of independent publication Ha Wan Pao and a DIY coat stand designed by Love Aesthetics’ Ivania Carpio, whose imagery will also serve as the main visual of this joint effort. Besides our unique curation of products, the collaboration will also feature a selection of daily essentials from kapok’s founder, Arnault Castel, adding his own contribution to our exploration of the art of living.
This month, join us from the 14th to the 27th as we explore the intricate stories behind the common items of our daily life.
