Kind of Blue Record Store

Cassette Nostalgia

Just less than 10 years ago, we were still mourning the death of CD and believed any physical format of music was doomed to vanish. Surprisingly, vinyl record has enjoyed a victorious comeback and becoming one of the mainstream media for music once again. Other than vinyl and CD, cassette, which had its time between vinyl’s and CD’s, is also slowly returning to the market. Kind of Blue Record Store from Taiwan is one of the forces that revived such analog format.

The founder of the Kind of Blue Record Store, You Ts’anpin is a Taiwanese author who once worked in the music industry. The record store runs in a pop-up format that first appeared in Taichung last November. Inside their little white cubicle, almost 700 pieces of music were showcased, inviting you to step inside into the golden era of cassette. Ts’anpin bought some of these cassettes from collectors, he also toured through Taiwan to visit many of the music stores to gather the cassettes. The color of the cover images has already faded, he had to replace them one by one, so as to recreate the distinctively tender texture of cassette again.

Kind of Blue Record Store has landed in Hong Kong in July. Collaborated with Eslite Bookstore,  the pop-up store located in the courtyard in front of Lee Garden One in Causeway Bay continues to impress its visitors with their huge cassette collection. Until the end of August, nostalgic music buff or young music buff who missed out the cassette era are given this great opportunity to see almost 700 cassettes that mainly feature 70s-90s music from the Chinese speaking regions.
