The Outmoded Tosa Washi paper

Tosawashi Products

Pressing the paper against the window on a sunny day, it is so transparent that one can see clouds slowly moving on the paper. Fixing it around a light bulb, it looks like a pair of wings flying towards the sun. The Tosa Washi manuscript paper produced by Tosawashi Products is designed primarily for drafting, letter and memo writing; it is a type of paper dedicated to recording flashes of inspiration. However, when actually touching the soft and thin paper, one would be easily convinced that the paper also serves other purposes beyond writing.

Tosa Washi paper is originally produced in Kōchi Prefecture, Shikoku. When being first produced more than a thousand years ago, it was used as offerings for the production of lacquerware and Japanese traditional dolls; it was even used to print money. The demand for Washi (traditional Japanese paper) started to decline after the western method of paper production was made popular. Since then, its use has been rather limited to copying scripture and practicing calligraphy. Tosawashi Products is a project aimed at preserving this invaluable traditional craft.

Tosawashi Products is a project initiated by Takemura Design and Planning. It combines the technique of Tosa Washi making and letterpress printing to manufacture manuscript paper, receipt book, envelope, memo pad and calendar. The Tosa Washi paper has one rough side and one smooth side, it is then given an even richer texture by the printing press.

On the back of the manuscript package writes, “Glamorous and somewhat outmoded, this is exactly where the beauty of the Tosa Washi paper lies”. Indeed, daily life never requires too much glitter and glamour.
