The handwritten fashion

TIME WARDROBE

Fashion symbolizes time, undergoing transformation as spring goes and summer comes, followed by autumn and then winter. However, propelled by fast fashion, fashion season changes every seven days. Within an air-conditioned room and in the face of global warming, we all forget to explore the odor of the seasons. The turning wheel of fashion accompanies our growth and experience, during which some clothes are insignificant while some elicit an understanding smile or even silent tears. Each and every piece of clothing corresponds to an imprint of a time period, resembling a calendar that resides within the wardrobe.

Throughout the seven-year journey of “redesigning fashion”, I have come across many moving stories. It has been my honour being able to extend each experience to the future. I would regard what I do not so much as transforming clothes but as using needles and threads to weave stories. After all, nowadays, ready-made clothes are not worth a penny but having become a milestone within “Time Wardrobe”, they are priceless in terms of emotional value.

Street Art Space)的《如果我們還有空間》(The Practice of Everyday Life)聯合展覽中和大家娓娓道出這些捨不得放下的季節故事。

A skirt witnessing the break up of a marriage in the summer of 2010; a school uniform remembering teachers and students from 2013 to 2019; the first collected item of a granddaughter in the winter of 2016; an unforgettable love story in the winter of 1996; childhood memories during the summer of 2018…I have borrowed all these pieces for the joint-exhibition titled “The Practice of Everyday Life held” at Oi! Street Art Space to recount in detail these stories of seasons with which we cannot bear parting.

The Céline suit that my father bought but I do not know how long ago. He passed on to me his taste for quality. And I stitched his deep regard to what is valuable onto a place close to the heart. May he live on with me forever. The origin of its delicate hand-crafted embroidery can be traced back to a bed sheet from Zara Home which cost only a few hundred dollars. It has now become a skirt, which is going to accompany me to the future events.

Thank you for making the free-styled ragdoll for me, even before we knew each other and for leaving my names letter by letter with your rubber stamps.  This exhibition testifies to a conviction which has turned us from being strangers to becoming firmly connected. We have been following each other within the borderless world of Internet, supporting one another, silently anticipating a moment that connects us.  Apart from old friends, I have also invited five new friends to share their stories and to create their own “refashion”. Not only have they showcased their craft, but more importantly, they have also displayed their own unique personality.

We became acquainted when you were 19, and since then, we have made progress together; your contribution is in every major event of my redesigning journey within these seven years.

Our perseverance in upcycling has binded us from your early twenties to your early thirties.

For this project in 2020, I have specially invited Phoebe Wong, an expert in fashion photography, allowing her to display every person’s natural quality through images in using her sensibility in capturing emotions during the opening and closing of shutters. I also invited Ichi Chan, a fashion marker of the new generation, with whom I have collaborated for a long time. I first met both of you when you were young. Over the years, we went our own ways and yet we were connected on parallel lines, perhaps thanks to our shared respect for nature.

Nature is like a spoiled child, making us stare at the rainy forecast for consecutive days and unable to fix a date for filming. After delaying for a week, we finally decided to go for it and managed to finish just before the arrival of thunder and lightning. Thank you for showing us your love in the end after messing with us.

We are a team of twelve, completing our mission without a hitch against the violent wind from all sides and under the sunlight hidden behind the clouds.

“Time Wardrobe” is a compilation of the creations and stories of me, Phoebe Wong and 25 other new and old friends, which are on exhibit from 27th June to 11th October. This joint-exhibition features also six other creative units and research partners from various faces, which display and propose innovative and feasible ways for integrating sustainable lifestyle into our daily life.
